Abraham - An Extra-Ordinary
Journey of Adventure and Patience
Sam Farina.com
Hebrews 11:8-10 - By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in a land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations whose designer and builder is God. (ESV)
Faith Always Brings Extra To The Ordinary
1. Faith Embraces Adventure
Genesis 12:5 - And Abram took Sarai, his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. (ESV)
2. Faith Endures With Patience
Romans 4:20 - During Abraham’s 25 year wait for a son, “he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God.” (RSV)
Hebrews 11:11-12 - By faith even Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised (see Gen 15). From one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. (RSV)
3. Faith Enjoys The Hope Of An Eternal City
Acts 7:3-5 - Abraham lived as a foreigner in a land where he had no rights of citizenship. Furthermore, he lived there with not so much as a square foot of land to his name.
Hebrews 11:13 - All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth Hebrews 13:14 - But we seek the city which is to come. (RSV)
4. Faith Escapes Death
Hebrews 11:17a,19 – By faith Abraham when he was tested, offered up Isaac... (19) He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead… (ESV)
Abraham is the embodiment of a person of faith (Gal 3:9) because he trusted God’s covenant promises (Gen 17), in the Gospel (Gal 3:8), in entering Heaven (Heb 11:10), in the child of promise (Heb11:11), and in the resurrection (Heb 11:19).
