11.16.14 // Hello My Name Is Father

“HELLO MY NAME IS...FATHER”

Romans 8:15 – “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

1. He is a LOVING Father

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

2. He is a WILLING Father

2 Peter 2:9 – “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

3. He is a GIVING Father

Matthew 7:11 - “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

4. He is an EVERLASTING Father

Isaiah 9:6 - “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is

given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

5. He is a PROTECTING Father

Luke 15:20 – “Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.” NLT

6. He is a REDEEMING Father

Luke 15:20 – “You, O LORD, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name”

7. He is a RUNNING Father

Luke 15:20 – “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.” NLT

Psalm 23:1 - The Lord is my shepherd;

Isaiah 53:6 - We—every one of us—have strayed away like sheep! We, who left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet God laid on him the guilt and sins of every one of us! (TLB)

GOD CARES FOR YOU!

1. Our Shepherd Provides All You Need

Psalm 23:1 - I shall not want. [2] He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. [3] He restores my soul;

• Physically
• Emotionally
• Spiritually

2. Our Shepherd Guides You To Good Places

Psalm 23:3 - He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. [4] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me;

On Our Journey We Receive:
• Comfort

[4] Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

• Protection

[5] You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

• Anointing

[5] You anoint my head with oil;

3. Our Shepherd Died To Give You Life

Psalm 23:6 - Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

John 10:10 - The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. [11] “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

Numbers 20: 9-12

[9] And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him. [10] Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” [11] And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. [12] And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”

• Moses Led a Dramatic Life. This Was the Greatest Moment.
• All he had lived for was taken away because of his disobedience.
• YET he makes the noblest of decisions: He would lead the people to a place he would not go.
• This is the highest form of leadership. It is also ultimately what Christian leadership is all about.

HOW DID HE ACHIEVE THIS?

• Lots Of Life Experience
• Great Doses Of Frustration
• A High Commitment To Adventure And Obedience
• An Ability To See The Big Picture

• Everything Is EZER With The Lord’s Help!

Psalm 33:20 - Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. [21] For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name. [22] Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, Just as we hope in You.

THE LORD IS OUR HELP AS WE ...

• Wait Upon The Lord
• Rejoice In The Lord
• Trust In The Lord
• Hope In The Lord

YOU CAN RECEIVE HELP FROM GOD TODAY ...

1. God Is Always Good

Psalm 33:4 - For the word of the Lord is right, And all His work is done in truth. [5] He loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

2. God Has Creative Solutions

Psalm 33:6 - By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.

3. God Gives The Best Advice

Psalm 33:10 - The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. [11] The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.

Psalm 33:13 - The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. [14] From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth.

4. God Will Save You

Psalm 33:16 - The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength enough to save a warrior. [17] Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory - for all its strength, it cannot save you. (NLT)

Psalm 33:18 - But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. [19] He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine. (NLT)

8.31.14 // Connecting with People Pt 2

We really can enjoy life and find purpose when we havea strong connection with God and people. Jesus sets an incredible example for us to follow in John 4. In this Scripture the Lord teaches us how to connect and strengthen our connections with other people. As long as we are in the world, there is someone that needs us. Let’s allow the Holy Spirit to draw us closer to God and those He wants us to connect with. 

Reaching out in love is a risk. But, it is a risk worth taking.

Opener: Who was your first best friend? What did you like about them?

Discussion Questions:

1. Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to the woman at the well. 

How have you been led by the Lord to connect with people? 

What have been the results? 

2. How do you find the courage to leave your “comfort zone” and walk across the room into the “zone of the unknown?”

3. Jesus asked for a drink of water to establish common ground. What are some of your interests that you think God could use to connect you with others? 

4. Verse 9 shows Jesus knocking down the barriers of gender, race and religion to make a connection. How can we build bridges in our church instead of putting up barriers?

5. Jesus uncovered three key needs while he connected with the woman at the well. How has the Lord used you to help others with their needs?

6. What are some blessings you have seen as a result of 

people joining a Connect Group?

HOW TO CONNECT

1. Walk Across The Room

John 4:3 - He [Jesus] left Judea and departed again to Galilee. [4] But He needed to go through Samaria.

2. Talk About Something Shared

John 4:7 - A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”

3. Knock Down All Barriers

John 4:9 - Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

4. Lock Onto Their Needs

• Satisfying Life

John 4:13 - Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, [14] but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

• Healthy Relationships

John 4:17 - The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ [18] for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband.

• Connection With God

John 4:23 - But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. [24] God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

John 4:25 - The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” [26] Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

SOME PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME CONNECTING WITH GOD BECAUSE ...

• They Don’t Know Who God Is

• They Feel God Has Hurt Them

• They Don’t Feel Good Enough For God

• They Are Living A “My Way” Life

CONNECTING WITH GOD

1. Look Into The Book

2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2. Live In The Place of Grace

Titus 3:5 – (God) saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. [6] He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. [7] Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life. (NLT)

3. Practice Daily Prayer 

Psalm 46:10 - Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 145:18 - The Lord is near to all who call upon Him.

4. Start To Serve

Mark 10:43 - Whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.

Matthew 25:40 - “Whenever you did it for any of my people, no matter how unimportant they seemed, you did it for me.” (CEV)

John 7:38 – “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said,out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Three things we desire. But do we pursue...

• His Presence: John 14:16

• His Power: Acts 1:8

• His Presents: James 1:17

To see the release of God’s blessings in our lives we must...

1. Be Tapped Into The Right Source – Who He Is 

He knows exactly what we need

Philippians 4:19 – And my God shall supply all your needaccording to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (NIV)

2. Become Vessels That Honor Him – Who We Are INSIDE

It takes a clean vessel

2 Timothy 2:21 - Therefore if anyone cleanses himself...he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

It takes an empty vessel

2 Kings 4:6 – Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, “Bring me another vessel.”

It takes a surrendered vessel

2 Corinthians 4:7 – But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

3. Turn The Faucet On – Who We Are OUTSIDE

John 7:38 – “He who believes in Me...out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

John 14:12 – “I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also, and greater works than these...”

STEPS OF THE DANCE WITH JESUS 

1. Closeness Brings Us To Brokenness

And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. (Luke 7:37-38)

2. Brokenness Leads Us To Distinction

Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. (Luke 7:44-46)

3. Distinction Leads Us To A Life Changed

And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (Luke 7:48-50)

Matthew 15:21 - Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

Matthew 15:22 - A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."

TIMES SEEM TOUGH WHEN ... 

1. God Is Silent

Matthew 15:23 - Jesus did not answer a word.

2. God’s People Let You Down

Matthew 15:23 - So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."

3. God Says No

Matthew 15:24 - He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." 

Matthew 15:25 - The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. 

4. You Are Treated Like A Dog

Matthew 15:26 - He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

Matthew 15:27 - "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 

TOUGH TIMES LEAD TO GREAT FAITH

Matthew 15:28 - Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
